Mishkan Ha'am - Sukkot News Oct. 13, 2008
Subject - Rabbi Host-a-Matic and the Big Sukkot Weekend
Hello, Mishkan Ha'am family and friends.
Happy Erev Sukkot! We're celebrating the holiday with all manner
of activities; check the schedule below for details. And don't forget
about Simchat Torah, next Monday, October 20th, at 7:15 pm. You'll be
getting another e-mail with an embedded e-vite shortly; please sign up
if you haven't already. This is a milestone event, and we need at least
140 hands (70 adults and teens) to support the Torah circle.
NEW! Rabbi Host-a-Matic! Mishkan Ha'am now has an electronic sign-up
sheet for families who want to host Rabbi Ben for a meal. The Heiman
family has been extremely generous in hosting Ben in their home when he
is in town, but everyone within the Mishkan Ha'am family is encouraged
to host him for either a Friday-night before-services dinner or
Saturday after-services lunch. You do not have to keep kosher; just
provide a vegetarian entree and a nice environment. To sign up, go to
http://www.doodle.ch/participation.html?pollId=qewqissr47as484i and
type in your name. Then "vote" for the date you'd like to host and mark
the date in your own date book. (You'll get a reminder about a week
before the date.) The current sign-up sheet only goes through December;
you'll get other opportunities to host Ben in 2009. Keep in mind that
you can host Ben more than once. Thanks in advance for your hospitality!
Thanks to all of you who contributed food to the Yonkers Sharing
Community. Mishkan Ha'am donated some 30 bags of food, which surely
will be used and appreciated by those in need. And a big thanks to
Harriet Stein, Monica Rickenberg, Clara Weinstein, and Sharon Kivowitz,
who coordinated the drive and brought the food to the Sharing Community.
This weekend and beyond:
Weekend of October 17-19:
Friday, October 17th, 7 pm, Supper in the Sukkah! Bring your own meal
and join Rabbi Ben for an informal alfresco Shabbat meal in the Sukkah
on the church lawn.
Saturday, October 18th, 11 am, Tot Shabbat. Kids ages 0 to 7 years old
and their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings and fans are
invited to a song- and story-filled Tot Shabbat, led by Rabbi Benjamin
Weiner. Reservations are not necessary, but nice: You can e-mail Sarah
and Channing Stave at thestave3@yahoo.com.
Saturday, October 18th, 7:30 pm, Adult Havdallah program at the home of
Marsha and Peter Heiman. Rabbi Benjamin Weiner will lead an inquiry
into the meaning and rituals of Sukkot and Simchat Torah. The learning
at Havdallah will be an in-depth study of text, and a discussion of the
meaning for us. Please bring a small dessert to share. For directions,
e-mail Marsha at marshway@optonline.net.
Sunday, October 19th, 9:45 am to noon: Tikkun Olam Project: Making
Strides Against Breast Cancer at Manhattanville College (in Purchase).
The walk is about 5 miles and is on fairly level terrain around the
Manhattanville College campus. The walk should take roughly 2 hours and
is manageable for children and anyone with some physical limitations.
Go to this Google Maps link for directions. Jodi Hirschman mentions
that the Mishkan Ha'am group will be walking together as a group.
She'll send a follow up email with the specific meeting location, which
will be near the registration tents. Registration can be done at the
college that morning starting at 8AM or online by clicking HERE.
To register online, click on the "Join a team" link, enter the team
name as Mishkan Ha'am and follow the directions. Keep in mind that if
you register online you will get an email from the Strides campaign
that you can forward to friends, family, co-workers, etc. to request
donations.
Sunday, October 19th, 4 pm: Congregational Sukkot celebration and
potluck dinner, led by Rabbi Benjamin Weiner. This is the patented
Mishkan Ha'am potluck dinner you've been waiting for... in the Sukkah,
no less. Bring friends and family to help warm up the autumn night.
Monday, October 20th, 7:15 pm: Our first annual in-house Simchat Torah
celebration, led by Rabbi Benjamin Weiner. Dance together in
celebration of the Torah! Then be there at 8:00pm when our Torah is
fully unrolled -- from the beginning to the end. It will be held
by the loving hands of all the adults and encircle all our children...
it will be a breathtaking view of our Torah, never seen before!
Rabbi Ben Weiner will tell stories and point out the Hebrew text where
some of the most recognized stories are written. B'nai Mitzvah
kids -- find your parsha! See the 10 Commandments and the parting
of the Red Sea! Watch for the e-mail and embedded e-vite and please
respond. We need all hands on deck--or more accurately--parchment!
Monday, October 27th, 7:30 pm: Adult Study Group, at the home of Lenny
and Marian Meyerson. The topic will be Jewish immigration. See details
in the attachment. (You can e-mail Lenny at m4601@aol.com for
directions.)
SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, November 8th is our New Member dinner/Welcome
to Mishkan Ha'am Havdallah program. Mishkan Ha'am families will be
hosting our new members along with veteran members in their homes for
an early (5:30 pm) dinner, followed by potluck dessert, Havdallah, and
fun and games at the church. This event is a highlight on the MH
calendar. If you would like act as a host, please respond to me at the
above e-mail address ASAP. Thanks!
Have a happy Sukkot,
Tobie
