The major themes of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish new year, are the creation of the world, the sovereignty of God, divine judgment and remembrance. These themes present an opportunity to identify the creativity that persists every day—the sovereignty of God as the power or energy in the universe that makes for a renewal of humanity, of the world and of community. It becomes the responsibility of humanity to make manifest “God’s Kingdom” on earth through acting upon our moral principles and values in order to bring about justice, peace and beauty for all people. More on Rosh Hashanah: Apple and Honey
A well known Rosh Hashanah custom is eating sliced apple dipped in honey. One of the primary reasons why we use an apple is because of its sweetness. Also, the apple symbolize Gan Eden (the Garden of Eden) and a fruit that grows on tree. Coupled with the added sweetness of the honey, it is symbolic of the ultra-sweet year we hope to have!
